Monsoon Surf in Goa
The waves don’t stop, they just move.
While most surf schools close down during Goa’s heavy monsoon, the ocean doesn’t take a break, it just gets wilder.
Some surf spots that stay quiet during the regular season come alive during this time, offering powerful waves, challenging rides for those who know where to look.
At Octopus, we may close for regular lessons, but the crew still heads out twice a week chasing these sports.

Monsoon Conditions at Popular Beaches
West-facing beaches get bigger swells during the monsoon, with waves reaching 7–8 feet.
Currents can be strong and paddle-outs more demanding at popular beaches, a solid duck dive definitely helps.
But not all spots shut down
Some hidden breaks stay alive even in peak monsoon. Thanks to a phenomenon called wrap-around waves, the swell bends into sheltered coves, creating clean, rideable waves despite the heavy rains.
These spots are scattered across Goa and even along the Maharashtra coast.
Breaking down our monsoon day trips
We prep boards early, 7am, and strap them onto the car. Usually 5 to 6 boards per vehicle.
With no shacks, toilets, or showers at the spots, we carry everything we need. Things like water, snacks, towels, and a med kit.
The drive takes about 1–2 hours, depending on the break we’re chasing.
Some surf spots need a short hike (10–25 minutes) from the parking area to reach the beach.
Enjoy the surf, look out for each other, and repeat in a few days.
